BCH 6744L
Molecular Structure Determination by X-Ray Crystallography, Laboratory
Fall
Laboratory practicals
("P" hereafter): Held Thursdays, 4th to 6th periods (10:40 am to 1:30 pm) in LG-171.

Course Coordinator: Mavis Agbandje-McKenna, Ph.D
Room: LG-181
Phone: 392-5694
E-mail: mckenna@ufl.edu

Introduction: This laboratory class will complement the lectures in BCH 6744. It will provide practical experience in sample preparation, operation of the instrumentation,
data acquisition, data analysis, phasing, and refinement. This hands-on approach will reinforce the applicability of this methodology in the analysis of the functional properties of a biological macromolecule.
The anticipation is that students will take both BCH 6744 and BCH 6744L, which will run concurrently. However, students may enroll in either BCH 6744 or BCH 6744L.

Pre- or corequisite: BCH 6744 or consent of instructor.

Recommended Text: Rhodes, G. 2000. "Crystallography made crystal clear". Academic Press, Inc. USA; and current structural-biology literature.

Tests and Grading: Grade will be based on homework (30%) and a completed lab project report (70%) written in the form of a crystal structure manuscript (Acta Cryst. D format).
