BIOGRAPHY

Professor Cohen worked with Donald Crothers at Yale University on the kinetics of unwinding small DNA, and earned a Ph.D. in biophysical chemistry in 1969. He undertook a two-year NIH-sponsored Postdoctoral Fellowship with the late Max Delbruck at the California Institute of Technology to study the biophysics and photophysiology of the avoidance behavior of Phycomyces blakesleeanus. A faculty member in the Department since 1971, Dr. Cohen has concentrated on the molecular mechanisms involved in the sensory and developmental pathways in Phycomyces.

RESEARCH DESCRIPTION

Our mathematical approach currently focuses on diffusional processes, polymerization of macromolecules and electrokinetics. We are also studying the kinetic and physical properties of a serine protease from Pyrococcus furiosus with very broad specificity and an optimal temperature over 90?C.
