Our program ensures that you will:

  1. Develop a strong foundation in the fundamental concepts of biochemistry and molecular biology including the structure and function of proteins, the metabolism of major biological molecules, and the maintenance and utilization of the genome. 
  2. Utilize the concepts of biochemistry and molecular biology to understand the underlying mechanisms of human disease states including genetic disorders related to the structure and function of proteins, inborn errors in metabolism, and cancer biology. 
  3. Describe how biochemical and molecular techniques can be used to develop new and innovative treatments for human disease including RNA vaccines, gene editing, and immunotherapies. 
  4. Analyze and discuss primary literature in the field of medical biochemistry and molecular biology to improve critical thinking, evaluation, and communication skills. 

Faculty

The program director and course coordinator is Dr. Deborah L. Smith. Each course has two or more instructors that are faculty members in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Each instructor covers course content according to their area of expertise. Program Requirements

To earn your Graduate Certificate in Medical Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, you will complete a total of 11 credits over four courses:

  1. Foundational Course (must be taken first)
  2. Advanced Courses (can be taken in any order)
    • BCH5205: Medical Metabolism (3 credits)
      An in-depth exploration of metabolism in medical contexts, covering basic concepts in carbohydrate, lipid, and nitrogen metabolism. Includes analysis and discussion of clinical case studies and primary literature.
      Prerequisite: BCH5404
    • BCH6906: Readings in Translational Medicine (1 credit)
      Focused on primary literature in medical biochemistry and molecular biology, with assigned readings, homework questions, and discussion board posts to ensure mastery of the material.
      Prerequisite: BCH5404

Admissions Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university
  • Organic chemistry (CHM2210 and 2211, CHM2215 and 2216, or their equivalents at other institutions)
  • At least one undergraduate biology course
  • Overall GPA of 3.0
  • Upper division GPA of 3.0
